"IN LOVING MEMORY OF SAMUEL PRICE WHO DEPARTED THIS LIFE FEBRUARY 12th 1890, AGED 52 YEARS"
"The Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away, blessed be the name of the Lord"
"ALSO OF ELIZA, BELOVED WIFE OF THE ABOVE WHO DEPARTED THIS LIFE JANUARY 17th 1891, IN THE 47th YEAR OF HER AGE."
"Thy will be done."
Samuel was born in Worcestershire to John & Charlotte Price, and was baptised on 15th January 1837 at St. James, Hartlebury. His father John was born at Rock in 1805, and he married Samuel’s mother, Charlotte Lamb at Chaddesley Corbett on 17th February 1828.
At the time of the 1841 Census, Samuel was living in Hartlebury with his parents, 3 siblings and his maternal grandmother. By 1851 his father had been widowed and the family lived at Woodside, Hartlebury. Samuel was an agricultural labourer.
At the age of 24 in 1861 Samuel had left Hartlebury and was living as a lodger in Portersfield, Dudley. The Census for that year records that he was a railway porter.
The intervening 10 years leading up to the 1871 Census confirms that Samuel had married, and started a family. In that year the completed Census shows that he is back in Hartlebury, living in Hind Lane with his wife, Eliza and 3 children. Samuel is still a railway porter.
Maybe he was working at the railway station in the Village. One of his children had been born in Shrewsbury, so at least for a short period the family must have been living there.
As an aside, the property listed in the 1871 Census immediately above the Price family was Waterlaide House, where Henry Griffith, a retired carpet manufacturer was living.
Samuel, with his wife and four children together with a nephew were still living in Hind Lane in 1881, by which time Samuel had become a coal agent.
His wife Eliza who died on 17th January 1891, at the age of only 47, was born in 1843 at Ombersley
Samuel & Eliza had 5 children – 4 girls and a boy. Their son also called Samuel died on 18th March 1947, and records suggest that he too is buried at St. James.
One of their daughters, on the other hand, appears to have emigrated to Canada.
Samuel died at the age of 52, on 12th February 1890 at Inn Lane. His Will was proved by “Eliza Price, his wife sole Executrix”. His Personal Estate was valued at £316.8s.5d.
